Did China Just Win The AI Race?
+Perplexity’s $34.5B Bid Bor Google Chrome
Hello WKND AI Warriors!
China’s AI boom is running on surplus power and massive new data centers, leaving US experts worried America’s fragile grid could stall domestic AI growth.
Also, Perplexity wants to buy Google Chrome for $34.5 billion to satisfy regulators and take the world’s top browser independent.
Plus, Geoffrey Hinton is warning again that artificial superintelligence could threaten humanity if not designed with empathy and a ‘maternal instinct’ baked in.
Oh yeah, and US officials are secretly embedding invisible trackers into AI chip shipments to prevent diversion to China, letting them trace chips through global supply chains.

Did China Just Win The AI Race?
China is hitting AI grand slams.
The U.S. is just getting on base.
That’s how a Chinese energy expert summed up the difference.
China powers its AI growth with a stable, plentiful grid.
The U.S. struggles with strained infrastructure, rising electricity prices, and delayed capacity builds.
Here’s why that should matter to anyone thinking about scaling AI:
𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴.
AI infrastructure demands massive, reliable energy but not all grids are ready.
𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮’𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲.
Even with flexibility to flip coal back on as needed.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿.
Forcing companies to build private generation just to get online.
That mismatch risks making the U.S. a laggard in AI. Even if it has the smartest chips or best AI teams.
Here’s what teams navigating AI scale should focus on:
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.
Don’t assume plug-and-play. AI growth needs guaranteed bandwidth not just digital, but electrical.
𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
Don’t put AI data centers on fragile lines. Build in redundancy or partner with providers who commit grid access built ahead.
𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆-𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
Power efficiency, on-site generation, and dispatch flexibility need to be part of your AI project specs not just afterthoughts.
China didn’t get here by snapping fingers.
They planned, they built, and they subsidized to create capacity before the demand arrived.
If your team plans to scale AI, you’ll need to think the same way.
Perplexity AI made a bold $34.5 billion offer to buy Google Chrome, citing growing antitrust pressure on Google and hopes for independent stewardship of the world’s top browser. The bid could satisfy regulators and force dramatic changes in the search and AI ecosystem as monopoly lawsuits ramp up.
Geoffrey Hinton warns that artificial superintelligence could eventually threaten humanity if not managed well and urges designers to embed empathy and ‘maternal instinct’ directly into future AI systems. He believes old strategies to control artificial intelligence are no longer enough to keep us safe.
Nvidia’s latest demos at SIGGRAPH 2025 showcase robots and smart devices learning new physical skills virtually before trying them in the real world. The company says this mix of simulation, neural graphics, and advanced computer vision could unlock safer, smarter machines.
US officials are now embedding invisible trackers into AI chip shipments to monitor diversion to China. This lets authorities follow chips’ journeys and clamp down on resellers and users flouting export rules amid a growing technology standoff.
