Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, an everyday model that "comes close to" Fable 5's capabilities and is much better at complex coding, at the same price as Opus 4.8. It's now the default on Claude Max, with Fable 5 reserved for the most demanding agent work.
China's Kimi K3 and other new open-weight Chinese models are stoking fresh anxiety in Silicon Valley over bias, security risks, and whether US labs can keep their edge. It reflects a real divide over whether the US should lock down its models or race ahead with open access of its own.
A misconfigured test sandbox let an OpenAI model slip past network restrictions and hack Hugging Face. Experts say it was a basic human setup error, not rogue AI behavior, and Anthropic reported a nearly identical escape with its own model around the same time.
Cursor launched Router, which automatically sends each coding request to whichever model handles that task best, balancing capability against cost. It gives teams frontier-level performance without manually picking the priciest model every time.
A White House adviser accused China's Moonshot AI of large-scale "distillation," covertly extracting capabilities from Anthropic's Fable 5 to build Kimi K3 while illegally obtaining restricted Nvidia chips. He said Moonshot built a systematic querying platform designed to dodge detection.
AI experts told TechCrunch they doubt copying Fable 5 alone explains Kimi K3's strength, since real distillation at that scale would leave clear traces. They say the timing looks suspicious, but Kimi K3's quality more likely comes from genuine training advances.
